In looking around for interesting material to post within this blog we found this unusual Roller listed for sale on the Berrybrook Steam & Classics website, which included the following text and very interesting images.

We have been asked to advertise this impressive roller on behalf of the owner. A fantastic piece of equipment which is totally unique. The French firm only produced this example with the SCC cylinder block. Chataignier No. 141 had a feature article in Vintage Spirit around 10 years ago.

It has been all over Europe and reputedly worked originally in France before ending up in the Netherlands. The current owners brought it in from the Netherlands 15 years ago and the maintenance has been kept up with since then.

In recent years it has had axle and bearing work. It will be supplied alongside a new chimney and chimney base as the current is tired. It is on rubber tyres which helps with slipping and with loading on lorries. The livery is reflective of what it originally would have looked like when new and is a chestnut brown. Overall, it is an impressive roller which gives the impression of being well-built.

The 3rd shaft gears will need replacement in coming years before it is used seriously on the road however it is useable as it is.

In terms of the current boiler condition; checks of the roller in our yard suggest it will need a firebox soon - the price has therefore been recently altered to reflect this fact and, as always, we endeavour to be as open as possible with regards the work needed in the coming years. We are happy to discuss this further with interested parties and encourage any prospective buyers to take the time to contact us, view the engine in person and to employ the services of an independent assessor to confirm what is needed and where they might be able to go. The altered price does make this roller a very reasonable buy and one which, after completing the job, will make the engine a very worthwhile purchase.

The engine is now based at our premises and available for viewings by prior appointment only with us near Exeter.

Asking Price (altered accounting for boiler work needed) - £29,995
